on film criticism (realization number 1)

Posted: December 22, 2009 in All and Sundry, commentary, film

i have already gone passed the “it’s a good film because it’s a good story or good plot” kind of appreciation. sometimes that kind of comment annoys me, i like hearing comments like “wonderful editing” because i rarely hear them. reminds me of mcluhan’s statement about how content is the one always noticed and not the medium. πŸ™‚ good cinematography for instance should equate to saying good film. i rarely hear people saying good sound editing when that’s also a big part of filmmaking. why this pre-occupation with plot and story as if it’s a written work? that’s why i no longer read film critics, they’re a bunch of liars. if i can find one who writes differently about film, maybe i will read his/ her work. otherwise if it’s the same kind of literary criticism imposed on film, i’d rather not waste my time.

Comments on editing and cinematography is not that rare on reviews. They are still close to the ostensible qualities of film, i.e., plot, character, setting. But sound editing? It is perhaps the least noticed because it is really not necessary. Pure cinema was achieved in the silent era; when sound came along, it was simply tacked on. The film’s primordial power comes from images, and images are only another form of text. They are the primary terms in a cinematic grammar.

    juldita nga entry uy.

it’s nice to see someone parade their erudition online. i wonder though why sound was “tacked” on later. would cinema be the better now if it were made up of “pure” images? πŸ™‚

hahaha. thanks for the comments.i don’t need a lecture though because i spent one semester studying film. but you are all entitled to your own opinion.

as for me, i still maintain that filmmaking is about sight, sound, and motion. πŸ™‚

    and images are not words.

  5. reefer says:

this is amazing. for the longest time i’ve never gotten this much traffic in my blog. hahah more comments and exchanges. i should post more thought-provoking or controversial entries in the future.
