The three-day run of our live performance art showcase text+body+site started this afternoon with Maryanne, Ella, Arvi, Yaz, Aril and Edwin as performers. Thanks to John for allowing the 2nd BAE students to watch the pieces that were set mostly at the CHSS atrium, and the volleyball court. It was encouraging to get immediate reactions from the onlookers considering that performance art is rare (and news) hereabouts. Perhaps one reason for this is that students, faculty and staff of the University are kind of afraid to “make a scene” in the school’s premises.

Once scary moment: While Yaz was breaking the ice in his performance, admin people went out to check what was going on. I completely forgot to remind Yaz not to break the ice on the tiled floor of the atrium. Because if it would show just a teeny weeny crack, we’re all screwed. The dilemma for me was that, if I’d be too controlling as to keep listin dos and don’ts, I’ll be a walking irony. Performance art has to be subversive, Arahmaaina once told me.Β  Besides, I had to ask permission even for the use of the atrium grounds, and had to assure everyone that I won’t be disrupting the entire school’s affairs.

But oh well, somebody did the job for me. A colleague, who’s an administrator, decided to call on Yaz while he was doing his piece (breaking the ice). “Yaz don’t break the ice on the floor,” he said in a stern reminding voice. Yaz thought he was told to stop, so he stopped. πŸ™‚ It was kind of funny actually.

I really don’t know if that got in the way of Yaz’s piece as “happening” or it added another dimension to it. All I could think of was “bummer.” Then I asked myself, why was I so scared while everything was going on? I’m a typical product of subtle censorship– discipline and punish.

The performance art pieces are the final projects of my students in the CW 102: Creative Writing Through Other Art Forms. All of the pieces went through a conceptualization process that was informed theoretically and creatively by questionings of the text, the body, and the site of art and creative writing.

Performances will be held again on October 2 and 3 after the celebration of Eidl Fitri. πŸ™‚
