“…are formed in a process of open discussion and public debate”–Hannah Arendt

this year’s upcoming sungduan festival attempts to gather women artists all over mindanao in a visual arts exhibit focusing on the theme of extensions and going beyond the local. such a vague theme one might suppose, but equally challenging and apt too as it opens up varying questions:

public is local; yet local also defines global. who and where am i in this context? where are the others located? who are they? where are the borders drawn? when are they drawn? are there even borders? how similar and different am i from those who belong beyond my borders? what are our common links, denominators?

and if i may center these questions on the category of women and/or women artists, what weaves us together? what tears us apart? how do you as filipino women and as artists define your local? do you even have to define it?

complicated as these questions may seem for those who just want to be part of meaning productions and never have to worry about these things. still i shall direct these questions at you in an attempt to open a public discourse. just comment away.
