a few thoughts on “alpha dog”

nick cassavete’s movie “alpha dog” is as depressing as it is disappointing. its effect would have been more powerful if the story was told differently in the appropriate structure. also, justin timberlake’s annoying presence contributes to the movie’s demise. although i was really impressed with the other indie young actors in the movie who literally attempted to keep the whole thing afloat.

emil hirsh, who was brilliant in “lords of dogtown“played johnny truelove (the mastermind of the murder). hirsh is a good actor but his talent wasn’t put to good use since he only had a few scenes. everything went to timberlake who literally hogged the movie in a bad way. although in the scene where allen ballenbacher, timberlake’s character ,was forced to tie the 15 year old zach mazursky (played by the amazingly talented anton yelchin) prior to killing him, timberlake almost had a perfect acting moment if not for young yelchin who literally gave timberlake a run for his money. yelchin’s restrained yet effective acting style was more refreshing than timberlake’s melodramatic acting. besides, every time i see timberlake in the scene, i almost expect him to suddenly dance. aargh.:-(

the movie’s only saving grace is that it was based on real events. hence, the content of the story can never be questioned. annoying timberlake scenes aside, the movies’ climax no doubt, still affected me. when elvis schmidt along with allen ballenbacher finally murders the young zach mazursky out of some trivial if not stupid reason, my heart sank. and i still felt greatly affected by the whole reality of such senseless killing.

Hmmmn… I’m surprised he did not take after his parents John Cassavettes and Gena Rowlands who did REAL indie films in the 70’s: A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Opening Night. I think you might like the first one. Cheers!

to ted: yup. it’s surprising. i mean he’s the son of a yeah yeah film maker. but don’t take my word for it. the reviews of the movie i chanced upon on were positive. some critics even gave justin a nod for an award-winning performance. hehe. 😉
