Desire and Memory

Posted: May 6, 2006 in Uncategorized

How do you get rid of a memory that’s slowly sucking you into unknown depths? How?

Celine in the movie (that happens to be one of my favorite movies) Before Sunset said: “memories are beautiful when you don’t have to deal with the past.” Somehow this seems reasonable. But then again, how does one avoid dealing with the past. Is memory not the past? Is it not about remembrances of things past?

And what to make of desire? This is another matter. But then desire and memory are always interlinked. Talk to Deleuze and Guatari. Talk to Paul Riceur. The desire to remember is probably a necessity among us, human beings. It is part of the human condition to remember, to shape one’s identity through memory.

I have been very cruel lately. Cruel to my mind. Cruel to my desire to remember. Perhaps, there is a need for violence to efface certain remembrances as though you are killing the voices in your mind slowly and surely every step of the way…..

The depths will be waiting for you.
